Guidelines for learning

I was reading kottke.org and found a post that focused on learning guidelines.

1. Release the need to be right.
2. Welcome one another's thoughts and opinions.
3. Suspend judgment.
4. Listen for understanding, not rebuttal.
5. Make personal statements by using "I" rather than "you".
6. Clarify first what was said before you challenge someone.
7. Take time to reflect.
8. Lean into discomfort.
9. Respond first to what was said before making your point.
10. Have fun.

Even though these are pretty simple, it is amazing how much we don't follow them. I feel that if I put them to practice in my own life, things would be extremely different. I'd be more successful and create an environment with less hostility.

I like the 3 or 4th one, I need to work on this myself.. Listen for understanding not rebuttal. After awhile these ways just get so engrained, and by habit.

The correct way to punctuate a sentence that starts: "Of course it is none
of my business, but --" is to place a period after the word "but." Don't use
excessive force in supplying such a moron with a period. Cutting his throat
is only a momentary pleasure and is bound to get you talked about.

Instead of giving money to found colleges to promote learning, why don't
they pass a constitutional amendment prohibiting anybody from learning
anything? If it works as good as the Prohibition one did, why, in five
years we would have the smartest race of people on earth.
